A dream treehouse

I've always wanted a treehouse when I was a child but living in a city made it a little difficult. Instead, we would built forts, tents or just crawl under the bed to play. It's weird right now but back then we really loved having those hideouts where nobody could find us. We could stay there for as long as we wanted. Telling horror stories and feeling like these were the safest places to be.

But what happens if you're an adult and still dream of a treehouse? Living among nature has always been such a wonderful thing to me. I don't feel like a city girl at all. Always craving for nature, woods, grass, berries, animals, fresh air, calmness... everything that living in a city prevents you from.

I did a little web research for treehouses all over the world and oh my what I found. I hope you enjoy these homes just as much as I did! :)

Safe Arbor in Switzerland.

Trillium. This treehouse seems to be a bed and breakfast house somewhere near Seattle. You can read more about it and a few more houses at Treehouse Pont. How cool is that?

The enchanted forest.

A modern, pitched roof treehouse.

A treehouse morning.

A dream treehouse.

Those are just a few of many treehouses. You can find some more on Inhabitat, Weburbanist, Baumbraum or follow my new board on Pinterest - Treehouses.

oh WOW! These are so beautiful! I had a wee treehouse with a rope ladder when I was a kid (just a few planks of wood fashioned round the tree trunks) - it was heaven! x

Kari @ bite-sized thoughts

Ah, these are amazing! I did a post on tree houses a while back because I am like you and have dreams of having one eventually - but you turned up far more than I did :) I am now dreaming of these!

anon

what happens when the trees sway and try to rip your house apart?

Chris

@Carlos My family is very involved in a treehouse resort in Southern Oregon. Yes they have to be Permitted and up to building codes.

brad francis

where are you in southern Oregon?  I grew up near Talent, Ore.  We built one in a Madrona tree as kids’    Cheers, Brad Francis

Arianwen

This is a beautiful house! I want to live there! I stayed in a tree house once in Thailand, but the steps were really scary and it didn’t have a toilet!

Ayi Bunbun

I have the same opinion with you Arianwen, The problem of tree house is toilet and danger from thunder attack.

Thundergod

According to a recent study, there are zero recorded instances of thunder attacking a treehouse.. Or anything else for that matter

Julius

And, even if you have to die from a thunder bolt hitting your tree house, it’s a bit better than from a stroke caused by diabetes :p more natural let’s say. certainly more heroic too

matthew

thunder attacks my dogs…and my bunny…and fish…cat….I on the other hand love it,need to move somewhere where I can hear it everyday.may be able to sleep each day.

doug

thunder is the sound caused by lightning… you special olympians

murph

yes   thunder is not a strike it is a sound caused by a strike of lightening…  live in paranoia all ur life of the things that might happen and miss out on so much   just saying…

Yesi

:) It’s always been my boyfriend’s dream to live in an elaborate tree house, with a bridge that connects to another little shelter high in the tree tops. I know it sounds crazy, but it’s going down.

Franc

I really like this thought. I guess we all need a secret place, to hide our thoughts, ourselves..the materialization of it just changes with the age.
Love all those three-houses ! Thinking about having a trip there for a while !

Ed

Like a bird on a hidden branch, safely able to see, hear and smell the beauty. Looking at those houses brought me back to wonderful days spent with my cousins many years ago.

The houses look fantastic! However, perhaps it’s only a fantacy to live in the forest and in the houses like this.  There will be a lot of troubles, bugs, high moisty, snakes, .......⊙﹏⊙b

Hi there, I’m an architect and since I had 5, I built houses and waste wood in the neighborhood, I think this has always been my passion ... build my dreams

Tom Poland

I wrote a novel in which one of the main characters, a reclusive white voodoo priest, lived in a large, fortified and camouflaged tree house. He lived on the last wild island off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina and he lived for one reason: to save the last island from developers. An excerpt from Forbidden Island—An Island Called Sapelo: Rikard started the engine and we headed toward his hideout. As we approached, the lodge grudgingly revealed more of its shape—a round, domed structure of massive cypress boards rigged with netting, broken branches, and leaves. Camouflage covered everything, even the razor and barbed wire barring other watery avenues to his stronghold.
Leafy camouflage netting covered the air above the lodge, built around an oak, and anchored against four large cypress trees. Beneath the house, three support poles driven into the earth rose like painted like cypress trunks. Spanish moss draped the house.
Rikard lived in an arboreal lodge—a fortress thirty feet off the water in the midst of a wetland forest. The whole effect reminded me of a banyan tree.
... “You like it here. I can tell,” said Rikard. “Well, there’s no place like home. Welcome to Conjura. He pointed above us into the canopy surrounding his fortress. “Now up there, time moves according to ancient rhythms. Up there I live in an easygoing way. It’s a quiet world far removed from televisions, computers, and phones.”
“You make it sound good,” I said.
“Oh yes, good indeed. Up there I can hear the sun burning. The winds bring me a thousand scents … blossoms, tree ferns, mosses, flowering plants, and I can watch butterflies and birds like I’m one of ’em. I wouldn’t live anywhere else. No way. Here, I am at one with nature.

Kate

I have just ‘stumbled upon’ your post.  What a beautifully designed blog you have.  Tree houses too!  Heaven!

Lineslinger

The only structure pictured that has a chance of longevity is #3, glass can be replaced after a hail storm. A foundation structure will tear itself apart if based on anything other than the main trunk.
A defrocked tree or a stump base upon which your dream house is built has a short life.
Heavy weather and tree growth can change your “one with nature sanctuary” in a hurry and make you one unhappy victim of nature.
Voice of experience speaking here…...been there done that.

Tom

Lineslinger: I have no doubt you are right but I wonder if you have ever seen some of the massive cypress trees down here in our southern swamps. They are as massive as bridge abutments and seldom succumb to the elements. Of course I was f=dealing with fiction anyway. Thanks for the comments.

Samuel Jeffery

Incredible!  These seem straight out of a fairytale.  When I was growing up one of my best friends had the coolest tree fort which we would often sleep in at night.

We had a little house we played in as kids but it was on the ground and we would play with our dolls and do all kinds of things in there. I remember one time we took the hotplate out there and cooked and watched tv at night.

Kelly

A wonderful example of combining nature and convenience.  So inspired.

A Stranger

Happily I say, and happily I will be, to spend a holiday in a tree house. I do intend these words, not just let them escape my mind.

Saying goodbye

It's been a great journey and an unforgettable experience but things change and finally come to an end, no matter how good they were.

Closing the blog would be just too harsh so I've decided to put Sheepy Me for sale and start searching for a person that would like to continue doing the work that I've started.
